Sunday 23 March is the final day of two glorious weekends when Whanganui is buzzing with the local and national interest in our great annual celebration of the arts and the artists who make it happen. As the dust settles, anyone wanting to carry on into the evening with some vibrant music can make it down to Porridge Watson on Drews Ave.

Owner Tony Sundman has been presenting monthly IJD Jam sessions for two years now and with this year’s International Jazz Day only one month away, this coming session will have something to talk about. The music inspiring these sessions is often referred to as ‘America’s original art form’, so here it is a fitting tribute.

We are hoping to welcome back piano wizard Chris Dann. Chris travels up from Palmerston North and it is always a pleasure to have him lead the house band. Michael Franklin-Browne adds his joyful rhythmic interpretations on the drums and Dave Griffiths completes the trio on bass. Together they make a great sound.

And then there are ... the others ... the musicians who come by to sit in with the band and the listeners who come to enjoy the always improvised and relaxed atmosphere the music creates.

It’s going to be a fine way to see out two week’s celebrating art in Whanganui.
